As a Senior Security Specialist and subject matter expert, the incumbent provides expert-level security guidance and oversight across a broad spectrum of functional areas, including communications security, information security, physical security, personnel security, and general security administration. The incumbent possesses an understanding of DoD and/or DoN security policies and procedures concerning the proper protection, handling, and marking of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and classified information, as well as Special Access Programs (SAP), Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI), and collateral classified information. This position ensures adherence to established security policies and procedures and provides leadership in the coordination of command security requirements across all levels of security (SAP, SCI, and collateral). The incumbent will lead a team of Security Specialists and will be responsible for guiding, mentoring and training their junior team members on application of DoD and/or DoN security policies and procedures.
The Senior Security Specialist proactively identifies and resolves highly complex and sensitive security issues, independently analyzing and researching these challenges, developing innovative solutions, and communicating these solutions effectively to all stakeholders, both orally and in writing. The incumbent leads the development and implementation of security strategies, independently establishing priorities, coordinating work across multiple projects, programs, and personnel (including subordinate security personnel), and effectively managing competing demands while proactively addressing obstacles to achieve timely and positive outcomes.
This position is responsible for leading the development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive Security Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent and effective security practices across all levels of security (SAP, SCI, and collateral). The Senior Security Specialist actively participates in and often leads command-supported security exercises and activities, contributing significantly to the command's overall security posture.
The Senior Security Specialist conducts thorough self-inspections of secure facilities, identifying systemic vulnerabilities and developing long-term mitigation strategies, diligently addressing any identified findings and implementing corrective actions or mitigating risks to an acceptable level. This position leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of workforce training programs to ensure employees understand their security responsibilities and stay informed of policy changes across all levels of security (SAP, SCI, and collateral). This includes developing innovative training methods and materials.
The incumbent promptly reports all security incidents and electronic spillages, initiating immediate containment actions and gathering all necessary information for a Command Preliminary Inquiry. The Senior Security Specialist ensures that corrective actions are implemented and that appropriate training is provided to responsible personnel, while also identifying and addressing root causes to prevent recurrence.
This position requires the ability to communicate and advise effectively with leadership at all levels, research projects, identify viable solutions, and establish priorities to support the command's mission. The Senior Security Specialist attends security meetings and mandatory training sessions scheduled by the security manager or Branch Head, staying current on the latest security policies and best practices and often representing the command as a subject matter expert. This role requires a proactive individual with strong analytical, communication, organizational, and leadership skills to maintain a robust and compliant security program. The incumbent serves as a technical authority and mentor, providing guidance and direction to other security personnel while working cross organizationally through the department.
