Position Description

This position is located in the Production Lines Division, MRO-Production Department at Fleet Readiness Centers (FRC) East, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic and/or Southwest. The employee works below the journey level applying standardized and specific procedures to accomplish tasks of limited complexity, such as making repairs that can be accomplished by removing, cleaning, reinstalling, or replacing defective parts, accessories, and components such as gaskets, bad actuators, worn cable pulleys, etc., on various aircraft systems.

The primary purpose of the position is to perform maintenance and repair of fixed and rotary wing aircraft systems, airframes, components and assemblies supported by the organization. In this position the incumbent may be required to rotate to various areas within the Production Department.

Position Duties/Responsibilities

The incumbent may be required to overhaul and repair a wide variety of aircraft systems and components, which includes pneudrau)jc/hydraulic, fuel tanks, flight control, rotor drive, gear boxes, rotor heads, rotor blades, etc. Applies standardized and specific procedures to accomplish tasks of limited complexity. Typical work assignments include the disassembly/assembly of aircraft or major components for overhaul or modification. Removes major aircraft components of aircraft structure or systems, i.e., control surfaces, doors, hatches, landing gear assemblies, control cables, etc. Performs repairs of limited complexity; i.e., removing and replacing worn or damaged gaskets, pneudraulic/hydraulic lines and couplings, fuel cells, etc. Follows detailed procedures that specify task sequences, tolerances, etc. Installs, aligns, and adjusts less complex aircraft systems, subsystems, assemblies and components. May work as part of a team under the direction of higher-graded employees to accomplish larger and more complex operations, i.e., jacking and leveling aircraft, installing and adjusting engines, landing gear assemblies, flight control systems, etc. May be required to make entries in the aircraft records of work accomplished and deficiencies observed.

The incumbent may be required to overhaul, repair parts, accessories, and components of hydraulic/pneudraulic systems, environmental control systems, flight control systems, and vent systems. Visually checks components to locate worn, dirty, or poorly adjusted parts and accessories. Corrects problems by removing, cleaning, reinstalling, or replacing defective parts, e.g., bad actuators, corroded fuel lines, etc. Looks up replacement parts in manuals or compares with samples. Obtains standard parts that are identified. Upon completion of these repairs, makes adjustments and settings such as cable tension, seat settings, etc. Conducts pressure and obstruction tests of fuel systems and checks pneudraulic/hydraulic systems after repair on aircraft.

The incumbent may inspect, disassemble, reassemble, overhauls and tests armament mounts such as bomb racks and missile launchers.

When/if the incumbent works on the flight line, the employee assists in the operational checkout of the aircraft. Using hand signals, communicates with the preflight person during preflight and/or taxi tests. Inspects engine for fuel, oil, and hot air leaks during engine run. Stands fire guard during engine starting. Removes filters for evaluation by others and obtains oil samples for laboratory evaluation. Flushes contaminated systems and re-services them. Operates ground power support equipment.

Uses common hand tools such as pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, tension meters, micrometers, bevel protractors, calipers, torque wrenches, plug gauges, hydraulic test stands, etc.

Duties may include minor preservation on various aircraft and engines, to include but not limited to preservation inspections. Inspections will include but are not limited to; inspect aircraft for leaks, Main Landing Gear (MLG) and Nose Landing Gear (NLG) shock struts for cracks, damage, security, and leakage. Lubricating MLG and NLG strut pistons with hydraulic fluid.
Inspect desiccant in engines, canopies, and Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) for saturation and replacement as necessary. Open/Close cabin doors/windows. Open /Close canopies, perform pre and post lube for aircraft wash, perform basic corrosion control, operate Ground Support Equipment (GSE), fold and unfold wings, and install protective barrier covering.
May be called on to perform various other tasks as assigned.
