Position Description

This position involves the identification, management and documentation of safety risks associated with the employment of new or newly upgraded and experimental ordnance devices, including explosive materials aspects found in the development of complex modern weapon systems. It includes the following specific types of efforts: (a) System safety work involving the engineering analysis of weapon systems to identify and reduce or eliminate safety hazards inherent in the design. System safety work includes the systematic application of Navy safety policies to the design of military hardware, definition of system safety requirements, performance of various specialized types of hazard analysis, preparation of system safety plans, and assistance in the overall implementation of safety practices for modern complex weapon systems. (b) Work involving the management and control of risk in testing or industrial processing involving ordnance items or high-energy materials. (c)Membership on committees responsible for the establishment of safety operating and test policies, enforcement of Navy-wide operating policy with regard to safety, granting of specialized extensions to such policies, or overseeing broad areas of risk management involving highly hazardous ordnance operations. (d) This position has a direct-delegated authority or responsibility for the management and assumption of risk involved in tests, transportation and handling of new experimental ordnance devices and materials.
