Overview:
We are seeking a 4+ year experienced engineer to support structural integrity of U.S. Navy and Marine Corps fixed wing platforms in the engineering field of Air Vehicle Loads. This position is located at the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD), Patuxent River, MD. Be part of an exciting team making a difference for the U.S. Naval Air Forces.
What you will do…
As a Journeyman Fixed Wing Aircraft Loads Engineer you will provide technical support to develop new aircraft and support ongoing sustainment efforts for existing aircraft while mentoring entry-level engineers on Aircraft Loads in the Air Systems Group, Air Vehicle Engineering Department. This work includes:
- Review Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) air vehicle Loads analysis and test.
- Become a Loads subject matter expert for assigned fixed wing aircraft.
- Serve as an airworthiness reviewer for structural modifications affecting the Air Vehicle Loads discipline.
- Identify structural loading problems arising during development or modification of fixed wing aircraft and establish the optimal approach to solve the problems.
- Effectively communicate with Flight Test Engineering, Program Management, and many other disciplines.
- Initiate, formulate, and establish requirements, guidelines and contract addenda for selected air vehicles to be embodied in technical criteria and documents governing assigned fixed wing aircraft.
- Utilize knowledge of engineering principles and practices including aircraft structural design and analysis, test methods and data analysis.
- Provide Loads input for the planning and execution of research and development programs.
- Present NAWCAD interests at professional technical symposiums and conferences.
Eligibility / Experience Required:
- BS, MS, or PhD in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related engineering discipline.
- Must write and speak well in U.S. English, and be proficient with MS Office tools to communicate ideas effectively.
- Must be energetic, creative and take initiative; able to work well both independently and as part of a team.
- Must have an ability to work well with others, develop and make presentations, proposals, budgets on planned and executed work, and inspire the confidence of our Fleet customers.
- Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Security clearance.
- Occasional travel may be required to support off-site program events.
- Must have experience or working knowledge with 4 or more years of experience in fixed wing loads, or similar work, in a government, consulting, industry, or academic research setting.
Desired Experiences:

Desired experience / working knowledge in fixed wing aircraft structures in the following areas:
- Structural Loads development and analysis experience
- Knowledge of flight test instrumentation and calibration
- Knowledge of aerodynamic, maneuver, and crash loads for fixed wing aircraft
- Knowledge of aircraft structural design and analysis, test methods and data analysis
- Basic knowledge of aircraft aerodynamics, stability and control, performance, and flight controls systems
